CONICET researcher participates in the UN Biodiversity Conference in Canada
Lucas Garibaldi works on issues related to the conservation and promotion of biodiversity, human well-being, among others.
The scientist of the National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET) and director of the Instituto de Investigaciones en Recursos Naturales, Agroecología y Desarrollo Rural (IRNAD, CONICET-UNRN), Lucas Garibaldi, participates in the UN Biodiversity Conference (COP15 ) in Canada. Garibaldi had been appointed this year by the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), to co-lead a new global report on transformative change.
“The IPBES transformative change report involves scientists from all over the world.It is multidisciplinary from the social and natural sciences because it aims to focus on change processes and how to overcome barriers to change, for example, destructive agricultural production systems into a regenerative system that includes the production of quality food based on the regeneration of the environment and caring for biodiversity”, the researcher pointed out.
In this new evaluation, the different scenarios and paths towards a sustainable planet were presented, integrating the diversity of values and behaviors that sustain and co-evolve with the indirect factors of change. Besides, practical options for concrete actions were offered in order to promote, accelerate and sustain the transformative change necessary for a more sustainable future.
In this framework, Garibaldi assured that the challenges are focused on “changing the food and consumption systems. The largest occupant of the planet is, in some way, the productive system, so from consumers and producers it is important to recognize the impact it has on biodiversity. There are ways to be more aware from any position in the system. We work a lot on process technologies to help in this regard”
It should be noted that the CONICET researcher’s objective is: to guide a group of more than 200 specialists from around the world for three years, contributing their experience in coordination, inter-institutional work and their recognized work as a scientist in biodiversity conservation issues, agroecology, pollinators and nature’s contributions to the well-being of people.
UN Biodiversity Conference (COP15)
COP15 from December 7-19, 2022 will convene governments around the world to agree on a new post-2020 global framework for biodiversity.
The framework sets out an ambitious plan to transform society’s relationship with biodiversity and ensure that, by 2050, the shared vision of living in harmony with nature is realized.
Likewise, the Conference will analyze the implementation of the protocols of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD, for its acronym in English) that address the fair and equitable distribution of the benefits of the use of biodiversity, and the transport, handling and labeling safe of living modified organisms.
