Resumen:
Recently we revised the taxonomic status of Mytilus patagonicus to Semimytilus patagonicus (d?Orbigny, 1842) (Signorelli & Pastorino 2021). Although our taxonomic conclusions are correct, there is a nomenclatural issue about the authorship and date of the specific epithet that must be corrected. The publication dates of the numbered pages and plates issued in the various livraisons of d?Orbigny?s (1834?1847) Voyage dans l?Amérique méridionale have been known to be problematic since the first collations of Sherborn & Woodward (1901) and Sherborn & Griffin (1934). Although some consensus appeared to have been achieved and the real dates to be known, new evidence discovered in recent years has revised the dates of several pages and plates (Cowie & Thiengo 2003; Dickinson 2017, Lim et al. 2018, Coan & Kabat 2021). After the publication of our paper (Signorelli & Pastorino 2021), P. Bouchet (Paris) called our attention to a nomenclatural problem with the valid name Semimytilus patagonicus. D?Orbigny?s text about Mytilus patagonicus appeared in livraison 84 in 1846, and its illustration in plate 85 was published in livraison 88 in May of 1847 (not in 1842 as stated on the wrapper) (Coan & Kabat 2021). Before that, Hanley (1843: 236) had already published a description of Modiola patagonica, attributing the name to d?Orbigny?s manuscript. The dates of publication of Hanley?s catalogue have been collated by Coan & Kabat (2012), who stated that the pages 225?272 and plates 9?13 were published in late 1843, which is 2?3 years before d?Orbigny published the name. For this reason, and despite the taxonomic conclusion being unchanged, the name Semimytilus patagonicus should be attributed to ?Hanley, 1843?, written in parentheses.
