Resumen:
Spectroscopic characterization (UV-vis, IR, RR, 1H NMR) of aqueous [FeII(CN)5(HNO)]3– has been achieved ensuing two-electron reduction of nitroprusside with sodium dithionite. The new complex is notoriously stable at pH 6, slowly decomposing to [Fe(CN)6]4– and N2O. It may be deprotonated at increasing pH, pKa = 7.7, with consequent oxidation of bound NO–  to [FeII(CN)5(NO)]3–. FeII(CN)5(HNO)]3– is the first non-heme iron-nitroxyl aqueous complex, able to be reversibly redox-active and proton-releasing under biorelevant conditions.
