Resumen:
Global investments in healthresearch and development reachedUS$240 billion in 2010, of which$26 billion were spent in LMICs.2 Thereare many reasons for this inequitabledistribution, such as countryspecificfund designations, complexapplication requirements, and thepoor competitiveness of institutionsin LMICs. Moreover, scarce researchfunds in some LMICs are channelledmainly to pure basic research?the?Marie Curie quadrant? mentioned byIain Chalmers and colleagues in theirpaper.3 One example is Argentina, anupper-middle-income country thatdedicates only 6% of its biomedicalresearch funds to applied clinical andpublic health research.4 If wasting ofresearch resources is unacceptable forhigh-income countries, it is outrageousfor LMICs.
