The opening chapter of the book first gives an introduction to previous studies of Christianity in South American lowlands, concentrating on the Amazonian and Gran Chaco regions. It examines the different topics and viewpoints from which previous research has approached the topic of indigenous Christianities. It then scrutinizes earlier research of denominationalism and inter-denominational relations especially in the field of anthropology of Christianity and presents the book’s contribution to the discussions on inter-denominationalism.
