Resumen:
Media governance A cosmopolitan critique, panel virtual en: 71st ICA Conference, 27-31 May 2021.The 5 papers weigh the merits and shortcomings of the concept of ?media governance?, its adaptability to local concerns, and the political concerns about this approach. The papers have common axes and, even if they analyze cases from different parts of the world, they dialogue with each other. All the papers criticize the concept of media governance, but their critics have different grounds and implications. The regional and local cases analyzed show different processes and particularities that pose new problems and nuances to the notion of media governance. The common issue under discussion is not how the media systems should be, nor what its rules should be, but rather who defines the rules of the game, who have the power to do it.In this sense, all the presenters discuss the role that national states, private corporations and, in less cases, intergovernmental organizations, civil society organizations and unorganized public or users occupy in the media and internet governance model. The key problem that all the presenters addressed in different ways is the unequal power relations among these players, the unequal distribution of resources that they have to impact on media regulations. Thus, in addition to reviewing the concepts of governance, government and regulation; the notions of democracy, participation, sovereignty, independence, colonialism, development and modernization are also discussed.
