Determination of the fraction of t-Fe3 B in hydrogen disproportionated Hf-doped Nd-Fe-B alloy by Mössbauer spectroscopy

Nd14.01Hf0.08Fe78.91B7.00 alloys processed by solid hydrogenation-disproportionation treatments between 705°C and 950°C were studied by Mössbauer spectroscopy. This technique is shown to be suitable to detect and quantify the presence of the intermediate tetragonal Fe3 B phase formed during this process which is considered to be responsible for the preservation of Nd2Fe 14B crystal anisotropy. It was found that for 30min treatments at 730-850°C, the fraction of Fe in t-Fe3B remained between 12% and 15%, while less than 5% was in the competing boride Fe2 B. The fraction of t-Fe3B was larger for shorter treatments. © 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
