Abstract: A checklist including six species of smut fungi on Rhynchospora spp. from Argentina is presented. Four species of host plants are cited for the first time for the respective species of smuts, K. ustilaginoideus on Rhynchospora hieronymi subsp. montevidensis, Leucocintractia scleriae on Rhynchospora asperula,, are reported from Argentina for the first time. Morphological descriptions and illustrations as well as a checklist and a key to the species are provided. The state of knowledge of smut fungi in the neotropics is discussed and an example is visualized by a graphical comparision of the known distribution of U. rhynchosporae and its host species R. barrosiana and R. rugosa.on R. asperula, and Ustanciosporium rhynchosporae on Rhynchospora barrosiana.
