The tribe Gnaphalieae Benth., emend. Anderb., recently segregated from Inuleae s. ampl., comprises 167 genera and c. 2000 species, and has worldwide distribution with centers of diversity in Australia, South Africa and South America. In South America, it includes 22 genera and over 100 species with highest diversity in the tropical and subtropical Andean Cordillera. A review of the South American taxa of the tribe Gnaphalieae is provided, including a discussion of generic limits inferred from morphological and molecular characters.
