Resumen:
In curved channels, in addition to the classic secondary flow cells, other coherent structuresdevelop in flow separation zones near the banks. These processes reduce the effective channel width and are of importance in bank erosion processes and in the morphodynamics of river meanders. High-resolution space-time numerical models have allowed for advancements in the investigation of these turbulent structures. In this case, a model focused on resolving large-scale turbulence, Detached Eddy Simulation (DES), which combines Large Eddy Simulation and Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes Equations, was applied. Flow separation processes occurring near the banks were studied and compared with laboratory experiment results. The DES model enabled the characterization of processes and coherent structures at a spatial and temporal level greater than what was achievable through laboratory measurements.
