Resumen:
Clarithromycin resistance in Helicobacter pylori reduces the efficacy of eradication therapy and is associated with singleA→C and A→G point mutations at nucleotide positions 2142 and 2143 in the 23S rRNA gene [1,2]. Several H. pylori genes related to the risk of disease have been identified. The iceA gene (‘induced by contact with epithelium’) has two allelic variants (iceA1 and iceA2) and has been associated with virulence in H. pylori and the development of a more severe clinical outcome [3]. This study was devised to determine the prevalence and mechanism of clarithromycin resistance and to analyse iceA status in H. pylori strains isolated from San Luis, Argentina.
