Resumen:
In the present work the use of of simple methods based on Fracture Mechanics Approach to determine the impact toughness of polymers is exemplified. The methodologies involved implies only the  measurement of the total energy of fracture. Experiments were carried out on commercial polymers (Propylene polymers, ABS resin and Polystyrene) that exhibit different fracture propagation patterns .  The Elastic method (Gc), the Corrected Elastic method (Gc) and the Essential Work of Fracture approach (we ) were used to characterize brittle, semi-brittle, and ductile behavior respectively. Fracture mechanics parameters arisen from previous methodologies provide real material properties suitable for engineering design and are thickness independent when  plane strain loading condition is met. Conventional Impact Charpy were also carried out with comparative purposes.
