Resumen:
This chapter discusses the implications of traditionally defined indicators to characterize the Formative period, with a particular focus on the productive option model, based on new archaeological data obtained in recent years in the region of the San Francisco River. Assessing different evidentiary strands, the chapter reflects on the process of sedentarization and economic strategies used by the ancient inhabitants of the foot hill of Yungas region in Jujuy. Due to their environmental characteristics, regions with important biodiversity favor successful long-term adaptations based on optimal exploitation of the numerous resources available. In such settings, the process towards increasing dependence on agriculture would have neither been linear nor generalized. The chapter also reflects on the usefulness of the concept of evolution, usually associated with the term formative, to understand the archaeology of the region, which is characterized by the significant stability of its social formations and the absence of evidence of transition towards centralized social and political organization over more than thousand years.
