Resumen:
A mathematical model was developed that simulates the homogeneous hydrolytic degradation of poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) microspheres used in biodegradable devices for controlled drug release. The model is based on a detailed kinetic mechanism that includes the hydrolysis of the different types of ester bonds by random chain scission, and considers the effect of the molecular structure and chemical composition of the polymer. The mathematical model allows estimating the evolutions of the concentration of the different species and the average molecular weights during the degradation process, and it was adjusted and validated from published experimental data. Homogeneous degradation experiments of PLA and PLGA microspheres were considered for the adjustment. The predictions obtained are in a very good agreement with the experimental results.
