Resumen:
Sulfur-containing compounds are commonly used as lubricant additives.  This study investigated the surface chemistry and tribological properties of dimethyl and diethyl disulfide on a polycrystalline copper foil.  The lubrication of copper surfaces can be of interest in many cases.  One example is copper brushes in electrical motors.  This study has found that dimethyl and diethyl disulfide decompose on copper resulting in the desorption of methane and ethane respectively.  This leaves a surface film composed of mostly sulfur and some carbon.  We have found that this film can cause the coefficient of friction to be reduced to as low as 35 percent of that measured on the clean copper surface.
