Resumen:
CO accompanying the hydrogen produced by methane reforming must be
removed when this hydrogen is to be used as feed to a PEM fuel cell,
because it is strongly adsorbed onto the platinum electrode. According
to current standards, the maximum amount of CO present must be less than
10 ppm [1]. Among of the major benefits of the preferential oxidation
process (PROX) is its low cost and easy implementation, without
involving significant loss of hydrogen [2]. The most interesting
catalytic systems for the PROX reaction are those that combine a noble
metal with a second, easily reducible metal [3]. In this work, the
objective is to design platinum catalysts, promoted with cobalt, which
are suitable for the PROX reaction and to achieve CO concentrations in
the exhaust gas which would then feed a PEM cell, among the above
mentioned limits.
