Simple one-pot preparations are described of chromatones, from phenoxypropiononitriles via nucleophilic addition of an aryllithium to the nitrile group and hydrolisis in situ of the formed azomethine, and xanthones, from diphenyl ethers via a metallation-CO2 reaction sequence; both cyclizations are accomplished in a regiospecific manner and in the presence of acid-sensitive groups.
