Resumen:
This special issue of Catalysis Today is dedicated to ?R&D Towards the Catalytic Advancement of the Latin American Region (Catalysis in Latin America)? and originated from the ?V Jornadas en Ciencias Aplicadas ?Dr. Jorge Ronco? (VJCA)?, which took place in La Plata, Argentina on October 17th and 18th, 2019, organized by the Centro de Investigación y Desarrollo en Ciencias Aplicadas Dr. Jorge J. Ronco (CINDECA), which is a joint research center of the Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Tecnológicas (CONICET), the Universidad Nacional de La Plata (UNLP) and the Comisión de investigaciones Científicas de la Provincia de Buenos Aires (CICPBA). These conferences began in 2011 and are held every two years at CINDECA. Its main objective is that our young researchers present the state of progress of the research in which they participate.VJCA was attended by 80 young and experienced scientists of CINDECA and different countries of Latin America. Three renowned invited lecturers participated in VJCA: Dr. Delia Gazzoli from Sapienza University of Rome (Italy) presented the plenary lecture Metal oxide-based catalysts for environmental and energy applications, Dr. María Luján Ferreira (PLAPIQUI, CONICET and Universidad Nacional del Sur, Argentina) presented a keynote on From the laboratory to the treatment plant: is it feasible for magnetic nanocomposites and Dr. María Alicia Volpe (PLAPIQUI, CONICET and Universidad Nacional del Sur, Argentina) exposed on Conversion of lignocellulosic residues by pyrolysis and catalytic pyrolysis. The different topics treated during VJCA dealt with Advance in Fine, Organic and Green Chemistry, Catalytic Processes, Catalytic Reactors, Catalytic abatement of pollutants, Synthesis, development and characterization of materials, Biotransformation Technology and Alternative Energies. Technology transfer was also considered. For organizing this special issue of Catalysis Today, we have had the valuable collaboration of distinguished colleagues from Latin America, Dr. Gustavo Seoane, from Universidad de la República UDeLaR (Uruguay); Dr. Paula Alejandra Osorio Vargas, from Universidad del Bío-Bío (Chile); Dr. Camila Costa de Amorin Amaral from Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (Brazil) and Dr. Christian Campos Figueroa from Universidad de Concepción (Chile). The papers received for this special issue can be grouped into 5 topics, namely:Topic 1: Synthesis and characterization of catalytic materials (10 papers)Topic 2: Sustainable catalytic synthesis of valuable chemicals (5 papers)Topic 3: Waste treatment, recycling and catalytic abatement of pollutants (6 papers)Topic 4: Biocatalysts and biotransformations (3 papers)Topic 5: Catalytic reactors and kinetic studies (2 papers)Before closing, we wish to express our sincere gratitude to the Organizing Committee of the VJCA, formed by Drs. Andrea Merlo, Soledad Legnoverde, Julián Rengifo and Carlos Luzi, and the Librarian Lidia Ibáñez for their enthusiasm and dedication so that we could successfully achieve this meeting. We also appreciate the enormous collaboration provided by the CINDECA staff for the realization of this meeting. Also, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to all the authors and reviewers of the manuscripts, and to the editorial team of Elsevier, especially to Prof. Miguel A. Bañares and James J. Spivey, for their efforts to put together this issue. Last but not least, we would like to thank the support of the commercial companies which sponsored the VJCA.
