At day 2 post-injection, Lactobacillus spp. CRL 1263 (from the CERELA Culture Collection) was intravaginally inoculated to mice, in four doses of 107 or 108 colony forming units per dose (CFU/dose). Animals were sacrificed by cervical dislocation at days 2, 5 and 7 post-inoculation. The injection of estradiol produced an appropriate hormonal synchronization of mice, because most of animals reached the estrous stage of the cycle at day 2 post-injection of hormone. Only at 2 days post-inoculation, Lactobacillus spp. CRL 1263 was recovered from vaginal samples (102-103 CFU/50ul of vaginal exudates and 102-104 CFU/g of vagina). Administration of lactobacilli did not produce structural modifications in vaginal mucosa, determined by histological evaluation of vagina. T lymphoid and   myeloid populations of vaginal fluid were not altered by administration of lactobacilli, which were determined by flow cytometry analyzing the expression of CD3 and Gr-1. The results suggest that the strain evaluated would be a novel, safe candidate for a probiotic formula to prevent urogenital infections in women.
