New approaches for improving the methods for indentification of persistent foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) viral infections are described. They consisted of detection of specific FMDV genomic fragments in oesophageal-pharyngeal samples by hybridization techniques with or without their prioramplification using the polymerase chain reaction. Also, for the identification of FMDV-specific antibodies indicative of viral replication, the development of a highly sensitive and specific immunoenzymatic method based on the use of purified FMDV recombinant nonstructural antigens as serological probes was undertaken.
