Resumen:
Introduction and objective: Biodegradable metals, such as magnesium-based alloys, are extensively studied as temporary implants. These materials must bebiocompatible and minimize the release of potentially toxic ions into tissues[1]. Also, as in any surgical procedure, there is a risk of local infection. Inorder to improve medical treatments, there is a need tolocally release antibiotics to avoid systemic doses. Silica-basednanomaterials, usually in the form of spherical nanoparticles, exhibitpotential as drug carriers and delivery systems. The objective of this study isto develop and characterize a silica-gentamicin (Si-Ge) system on a pre-treatedsurface of a magnesium-based AZ91 alloy.
