Resumen:
The fern Pityrogramma trifoliata (L.) R.M. Tryon shows lipophilic exudates (farina) on the back of its fronds, some specimens being white and others yellow. Studies of the farina have focused on the isolation and identification of the main constituents, overlooking their potential pharmacological activities. The main types of compounds isolated from exudates are flavonoids that display different bioactivities, such as antimalarial (1), antifungal (2), antioxidant (3) and anti-inflammatory (4). Extracts of the white and yellow farina (WF and YF, respectively), as well as the three major flavonoids identified as constituents of the yellow farina (2′,6′-dihydroxy-4′-methoxychalcone, 2′,6′-dihydroxy-4′-methoxydihydrochalcone and 5-hydroxy-7-methoxyflavanone)(5) displayed promising activity against Biomphalaria peregrina (6), a vector of the human parasitosis known as schistosomiasis. The purpose of this study was to assess the antibacterial and antibiofilm activities of fractions obtained by column chromatography from extracts of the farina of Pityrogramma trifoliata against biofilm producing bacteria so as to justify further chemical study.
