Resumen:
Insects have always coexisted with humanity and will survive it. While some insects captivate with beauty or provide valuable services, most are seen as nuisances or bystanders in the natural environment. Recent high-profile studies highlighting declines in insect populations have raised concerns about their significance, prompting debates about how to measure biodiversity trends. Although there are valid critiques to some specific results, current evidence supports declines across several insect groups, urging action to reverse or mitigate the consequences. This article summarizes knowledge on measuring insect declines, including their complexity, specific groups affected, and how to evaluate and communicate controversial reports.
