Resumen:
One of the major limitations to achieve high yields in corn at high densities is the uptake of radiation throughout the canopy. The leaf architecture explained by the leaf angle (LA) and leaf orientation value (LOV) are the important characteristics to achieve high efficiencies of light interception. The aim of this work is to analyze the genetic variability among hybrids and their parental lines grown in field conditions at contrasting nitrogen. Two levels of nitrogen were used (0 -200 kg N ha-1), three public lines (LP2, ZN6, B100) and its derivatives hybrid were tested in a split plot block design. Leaf angle and orientation value of 3 consecutive leaves over the silk, ten days after flowering were measured. As a result variability between genotypes was found only for LA, but not between levels of nitrogen and LOV. LP2 and B100 had similar LA, both higher than ZN6. LA mean ZN6xLP2 and ZN6xB100 hybrids showed intermediate values than their parents, while for LP2xB100 were higher. This makes the inference that there was an additive effect for LA. Furthermore, the two variables were not correlated. Completing this study related to light capture variables, would provide information on the genetic effect of plant architecture and its effect on the efficiency of light interception.
