A major problem in commonbean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) agriculture is thatmost of the cultivated area is located inrainfed regions leading to low grain yieldsdue to intermittent and terminal drought. Tobetter understand the common beanresponse to water limitation, we havefollowed different approaches that include aphysiological and molecular characterizationof the response comparing cultivars differingin their drought resistance, the functionalcharacterization of drought responsiveproteins and of small non-coding RNAs(microRNAs). Some of the results are brieflydescribed.
