Resumen:
The archaeological contexts of dif ferent periods from Sou thern Patagonia (Chi le and Argentina) frequently in clude ma terials showing ev idence of pecking and poli shing techniques. Functional analysis of these materials is essen tial in order to iden tify traces of manuf actu re and use, and therefore to help usunder stand the techno-economi c org anizati on of these hunter e gath erer societies .This pape r presents t he results of an exp eriment al program on manuf acture and use wear traces on pecked and poli shed artefacts. This an alysis allowed us to recognize natu ral, taphonom ic, an d techno-logica l traces and to bui ld a metho dologic al framework for the ana lysis of archaeological artifacts . The se results are relevant for the analysis of t he archaeological record, since they imply that it will be possibleto recognize these traces on tools made by poli shing techniques that have subsequently been us ed with other types of materials.
