Culturalplatforms during the transitions to democracy in the Southern Cone:new magazines and institutions in Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay(1973-1990) SofíaMercader(CIALC-UNAM,Mexico)LucasDomínguez Rubio(CeDInCI-UNSAM/CONICET,Argentina)AbstractThischapter analyses the cultural landscape during the dictatorial andpost dictatorial years in Argentina, Chile and Uruguay. The end ofthe military rule in these countries brought about a reconfigurationof the cultural field and academic institutions. Although thetransition took on different forms in each country, the return todemocracy was generally accompanied by a cultural and institutionalopening and the broadening of the public sphere. This openingentailed a new kind of public insertion of intellectuals, writers,academics and people of culture in general, many of whom had lived inexile during the dictatorships? most repressive years. Moreover, inthe cases analysed, the transitions imposed a new relationshipbetween intellectuals and the state. Examples of this reconfigurationof the cultural and intellectual fields was the creation ofinfluential periodical publications, such as the Argentine magazinePuntode Vista (1978-2008),the Chilean journals Análisis(1977-1993)and RevistaChilena de Derechos Humanos (1983-1990),and the Uruguayan weekly Jaque (1983-1990),among others. Research institutions and intellectuals that engaged insocial, economic and legal sciences also played a crucial role duringthese transitions. In Chile, numerous newly created institutionsplayed an important role in the analysis of society, while in Uruguaymany political and intellectual figures returning from exile assumedpolitical responsibilities. From different perspectives, thesemagazines and institutions greatly contributed to a decisive debateon legal sciences, democracy and Human Rights taking place in theSouthern Cone during the transitions to democracy in the 1980s.Theseplatforms offered a space for expression and innovation during a timeof instability and uncertainty, as they allowed intellectuals toadvance their ideas and to participate in the events of thetransition, contributing to the reconfiguration of culture andpolitics in the Southern Cone. p { margin-bottom: 0.25cm; line-height: 115%; background: transparent none repeat scroll 0% 0%; }a:link { color: rgb(0, 0, 128); text-decoration: underline; }
