Resumen:
GHG concentrations are increasing by anthropogenic action, being the agricultural sector one of the most important sectors contributing to this increase. The aim of this study is to quantify GHG emissions from sugarcane in Tucuman generating specific and local emission factors that could lead to accurate GHG balances. A field trial is being conducted in Tucuman with a randomized complete block design with four replications. Treatments are: a) harvest without sugarcane burning before or after it, and b) harvest with sugarcane burning. Closed vented chambers are used to capture gases, and their quantification is being done by gas chromatography. Emission rates of CO2 and N2O show higher values in the treatment of no burning with respect to the burning one, while there is no evidence of CH4 emission under either of the two treatments. However, if we analyze the results of this work as a complete GHG balance of the crop, which include emissions from burning the crop before or after harvest, the practice of green harvest could reduce total GHG emissions.
