Resumen:
Since the late nineties, TiO2 nanoparticles immobilized onto several matrices have exhibited promising properties as self-cleaning and antimicrobial surfaces photoinduced by UV light irradiation due to the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as hydroxyl radical (•OH) among others. However, pristine TiO2 nanoparticles are photo-active only under UV light irradiation limiting their applications under visible and indoor light. Today, the development of visible-light absorbing TiO2 seems to be promising to overcome this drawback and polymeric films exhibit interesting features such as durability, stability, mechanical strength, high surface, and chemical and architectural diversity among others to be used as support of TiO2 nanoparticles. In this chapter different physical, chemical, and photoinduced procedures to synthetize polymeric films containing pristine TiO2 and visible-light absorbing hybrid-TiO2 nanoparticles were revised and how these materials can be evaluated as photoinduced self-cleaning and antimicrobial surfaces was discussed.
