Resumen:
The physical and mechanical properties of the material are closely related to the shape and proportion of graphite. According to previous work [1] there have been significant changes in values of the yield strength, elongation and impact resistance. For example, for 30% decrease nodularity, 95 to 65% have been recorded falls of 22% for yield strength, 46% for elongation and 25% for impact resistance. The most widespread techniques for determining nodularity graphite included visual evaluation by light microscopy, image analyzers special microscopes and END [2]. This work aims to establish a procedure to evaluate quantitatively, quickly and accurately, the graphite morphology of spheroidal graphite cast iron using modern computerized quantitative metallography. The method allows quantifies the percentage of graphite phase is present; as well as, the amount and size of nodules; in addition to evaluate the degree of nodularity using Weighted Average Factor Form (WFF)[3-4]. The traditional procedure uses comparative methods with the help of standard chart. The proposed procedure differs primarily about to the microscopic observation in that it’s complemented with a video camera that allows image analysis works with software, enabling to characterize the graphite present phase. This procedure is helpful to assist the task of metallurgist and allows make reliable comparative statistical studies for determination of material quality.
