Resumen:
Mortality on longlines is one of the world’s most serious threats for pelagic top predators (e.g., seabirds, cetaceans, large pelagic fishes, sea turtles). In the Mediterranean, the critically endangered Balearic Shearwater Puffinus mauretanicus is the most threatened seabird, and conservation action needs to be addressed both at the breeding colonies and at the foraging grounds at sea. We present evidence of the bycatch of Balearic Shearwaters in the artisanal bottom longline fishery of the western Mediterranean, based on onboard surveys, questionnaires, and a non-systematic compilation of events affecting a large number of birds. This bycatch occurred non-uniformly, but large numbers are reported when aggregations are caught. There is an urgent need to assess and reduce bycatch of Balearic Shearwaters on a global scale due to its high extinction probability.
