SELF-CHANNELIZATION OF SUBMARINE CHANNELS:The present report describes a laboratory work on the evolution of sedimentary fans built by the passage of turbidity currents. The experiments are based on the previous work carried out by Yu et al. (2006) in which it was seen that the passage of turbidity currents and dilute mudflows over submarine fans often resulted in intense channelization. Such experimental leveed-channels showed a remarkable resemblance to similar channels seen the distal end of some submarine fans (Yu et al., 2006).Significantly, in the present experiments the effect of an abrupt change in slope is further examined, in order to explain or predict changes in deposits associated with natural slope breaks. Additionally, the experiments use two different sediment volume concentrations: 10%, similar to that used by Yu et al. (2006), and 5%, which ensured the generation of a low-density turbidity current. Special emphasis is given to the temporal geometry of the sediment bodies (channels, levees, lobes) generated by the break in slope.
