Resumen:
The article analyzes the importance of the financial capacity as a criterion to conform and maintain municipal governments in Argentinian national territories, focusing in the case of Misiones between 1897 y 1927. By observing several different sources at the national, territorial and municipal level, it states that this implicit criterion, emanated from certain juristic conceptions, influenced the official records, which mostly emphasized fiscal surplus situations. This was specially so when the records were destined to be published as official memoirs or presented to higher government authorities. Since to the superior authorities the capacity to finance themselves with their own resources, was a main factor to determine the conformation of a new municipal council and, most importantly, its continuity, the papers argues that the exhibition of financial surpluses constituted to municipal councils a feasible practice to ensure their survival.
