Resumen:
Late sowings of maize (Zea mays L.) at Balcarce (37º45?S Buenos Aires, Argentina) present some disadvantages for grain production that can be reduced or eliminated through the adjustment of the hybrid cycle length. The objective of this work was to quantify the optimum hybrid cycle length depending on the sowing date based on: i) grain potential yield; ii) frost risk during reproductive period and iii) post-maturity grain drying rates. A simple mechanistic simulation model was designed to evaluate the combined effects of sowing date and hybrid cycle length on a virtual experiment for 30 years of the 1982-2011 climatic series. Results obtained by simulation showed that optimum cycle length of maize hybrids decreases with the delay in sowing date. This cycle length adjustment increases grain potential yield, reduces the risk of frost during the reproductive period and improves conditions for post-maturity grain drying.
