This work studied the filling dynamics of the Brindley´s glands and determined whether the capacity to release the secretion is associated with feeding. In addition, we analyzed the relationship between this dynamics and behavioural responses of larvae. Adults were disturbed weekly, fed or not, their glands were dissected and then its contents were analyzed according to the fasting state using a gas chromatograph. Using a double choice olfactometer in behavioural tests, the orientation of larvae submitted to volatiles released by disturbed adults with varying degrees of fasting was analyzed. Not fed disturbed adults presented empty glands (1.7 g), while fed adults recharged them (11.3 mg). When larvae were exposed to odors from three time?s disturbed adults that were unfed, they did not show a direction opposite to the stimulus, whereas against odors from three time?s disturbed adults, posteriorly fed, they were oriented in a direction opposite to the stimulus. Taking as an indicator the isobutyric acid content, the filling dynamics of the glands depended on feeding. The fasting degree of adults would limit the recharge capacity of Brindley´s glands for an eventual release of the secretion to a new disturbance event that would be reflected in the escape behaviour of larvae.   Acknowledgments The research was supported by the ANPCyT (PICT01191), CONICET and Universidad de Buenos Aires.
