Resumen:
The present work shows the precise age of some of the most complete fossil specimens belongingto Glyptodontidae exhumed in the Villavil-Quillay basin (province of Catamarca, Argentina). Forthis, these specimens were placed in an ideal stratigraphic profile of this area, adding informationof radiometric dating by K40/Ar40 and Ar40/Ar39 isotopes carried out by other authors. The fossilshave been classified as corresponding to the subfamilies Doedicurinae and ?Hoplophorinae? Idisagree with the usage of this ill-defined subfamily, as the authors themselves acknowledgewriting it between inverted commas. Concerning Doedicurinae, the genus Eleutherocercus showsa homogeneous distribution of remains along the sequence, from 7.14±0.05 Ma to levels after3.66±0.05 Ma; the geological record shows a higher concentration of fossils in Zanclean stageconsider this wording: ?the Zanclean, the lowest stage of the Pliocene?, being also the taxon withthe latest records together with the genera Stromaphorus and Phlyctaenopyga. Within?Hoplophorinae?, oldest record of the genus Eosclerocalyptus is close to 7.14±0.05 Ma, butremaining fossils were concentrated in levels ranging from 5.64±0.16 Ma to 5.3±0.2 Ma, andcorresponding to the limit between the Messinian consider this wording ?the Messinian, the finalstage of the Miocene? and the Zanclean stages if my suggestion is heeded, there?s no need towrite ?stages?. In turn, fossils of the genera Stromaphorus and Phlyctaenopyga are only recordedfor an age range of ca 6Ma. to 3.66±0.05 Ma, so far limited for the late Messinian to all Zancleanstage. Obtaining a precise time frame for these fossils, delete comma will allow us the possibility ofgenerating a much more reliable information in future concerning paleobiological, taxonomic andevolutionary issues, delete comma still to be resolved, delete comma for Glyptodontidae diversityof the Argentinean Being a non-native speaker, I only can wonder whether the adjective should notbe ?Argentinian? North Western region.
