Resumen:
The barras bravas (Argentine hooligans) are the mostfanatical and violent soccer supporter groups in Argentina. They are often engaged in bloody street battles in whichthey seek either to defend the honor of their club againstother barras bravas or to control the economic resourcesof their own club. Our hypothesis is that the existing competitivenessin soccer and the geographic proximity of barras bravasare the elements which foster rivalries. The idea thatsports competitiveness actively promotes social conflicthas been widely documented in anthropologist literature, and such hypothesis can be tested following an SNAapproach. As a matter of fact, it has been observed thatthere is an existing correlation between the numberof games played by the soccer teams and the rivalryties against their barras bravas, as well as an elevatedhomophily between those barras bravas that belong to thesame province or city.
