?The Antinomy of Pure Reason? is a central chapter in the Critique of pure reason. In this paper I intend to prove that in the thesis of the ?Second Antinomy? are involved both a categorial and empirical synthesis. As a corollary I show that this thesis can only refer to the existence of simple material parts and not to a simple immaterial substance. I start with a general interpretation of the ?Antinomy? and then I consider the category and syntheses involved in the ?Second Antinomy?.
