On the applicability of the concept of material evidence. Some examples from the Greek tradition of Aristotle’s First Analytics

The aim of this presentation is to give a picture of the concept of material evidence in the field of classical philology, where it first came into prominence. Examples will be taken from the tradition of Aristotle, in order to show in which specific cases physical peculiarities in a model may account for a peculiarity transmitted to any of its descendant. Additional categories to those already presented by Reeve will be advanced, together with a large number of hitherto unreported examples.
