We analyzed the ovarian anatomy of Lagostomus maximus using a confocal microscopy with Lysotracker Red, a vital dye. Reconstruction of anatomical convolutions showed that all the follicular growth stages, from early primordial to fully mature Graafian follicles, could be found in the adult ovary, unlike most mammals in which early primordial follicles were restricted to foetal life. Germinal tissue properly was found invading the entire organ and restricting the localization of medullar tissue. As Lysotracker red also detects apoptotic cells, this enabled to confirm previous results indicating a reduced apoptotic rate by BCL-2 overexpression and TUNEL analysis.
