In thiswork we employed and compared multiple synthetic methods for the preparation ofthe mullite type compound Bi2Al4O9, aiming to explore its rather highphotocatalytic activity, that has been recently reported. The resulting powderswere characterized by means of a wide range of techniques including diffusereflectance UV-Vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electronmicroscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Ramanspectroscopy. Finally, the photocatalytic activity of each sample was assessedby means of the oxidation reaction of aqueous methanol under irradiation with amonochromatic visible light source.
