Resumen:
In social sciences and humanities, ?popular? is inevitably linked with a certain dimension of the subaltern ? or better yet, the subalternized. Always used as an adjective, ?popular? is qualified by its absences: the dominant, the official, the cult, the highbrow. It is from this point that the noun ?the popular? has been built. This meaning, created from centuries of use in our languages the ? and treatment in our disciplines ? operates in two spaces: One space is in the political debate, where the matter of ?the people? and its role in democratic societies are central. The other space is in the cultural debate, where the main concept is ?popular culture? and its related category ?mass culture? (many times confused and overlapped with ?popular culture?). By looking at both the meanings and agendas related to this area, the knowledge and resultant worries associated with the term can be analyzed with the understanding that the debate on popular culture is also linked to one about democracy
