Resumen:
Coatings are the most efficient way, considering the cost/benefit ratio, to protect materials against environmental agents. Microorganisms are major biotic agents posing risks to human health, they are ubiquitous in the environment, and they seek to colonize and grow on various surfaces as part of their life cycle. Microorganisms do not just affect the surfaces of materials, they are also a major problem in human health especially in the context of indoor environments, such as offices, schools, and homes. Evidence has built up in recent years indicating the important role that contaminated environments play in the transmission of infections, especially in hospitals. Natural products have been investigated as a possible remedy, especially since they are a vast source of compounds with antimicrobial potentials that can be applied as additives in paint and coating technology.
