Resumen:
During the firing of a cement based refractory, the system looses cohesion and mechanical resistance between 200-1200°C. The minimum is reached when the temperature is such that the dehydration is occurring but the ceramic bond is not even formed. In this work, the effect of firing temperature on the modulus of rupture of two cement based monolithic refractories that are different in compositions and granulometries of aggregates and bonding phases was studied. The specimens (230x50x50 mm3) were prepared by ramming and they were firing 1h at different temperatures: 800°C, 1200°C and 1350°C. The modulus of rupture was determined in three points flexure (ASTM C133-94) in an Instron 4467 machine in load control (0.7 kN/min). MOR values were related to the mixtures characteristics and the final microstructures of tested bars in function of the firing temperature.
