Resumen:
The modulus of rupture (MOR) of four monolithic refractory materials used to repair coke ovens by hot gunning were determined. The dependence of MOR on the specimen size was also studied. The materials have different origins and they also differ in compositions and granulometries of aggregates and bonding phases. Three points flexure was employed (ASTM C 133-94) to test prismatic specimens (230x50x50 mm3 and 150x25x25 mm3) pre-pared by ramming of material/water mixes and sintering at 1200°C, 1h. The specimens were tested in an Instron 4467 machine in load control at 0.7 and 0.25 kN/min for small and big specimens, respectively. The differences between MOR values determined for each material were related to the characteristics of the respective aggregates and bonding phases and to the microstructures of the tested bars. The results were correlated to material properties evaluated at high temperature in a previous work: adhesion and thermal expansion/ creep.
