Resumen:
Sucrose or its hydrolysis products are not usually accumulated in the m itochondrial m atrix, although respiration is an im portant fate for hexoses in plantcell. The occurrence of alkaline/ neutral invertases (A/ N-Inv) in these organelles was recently demonstrated and their roles are still not elucidated. Wefunctionally characterized a novel A/N-Inv isoform from Arabidopsis, and dem onstrated its mitochondrial fate by transient expression of a chim ericalconstruction. Analysis of knockout single and double m utants in three mitochondrial A/N-Inv genes dem onstrated a new role for these proteins, showingdifferential growth phenotypes (particularly, in root and caulinar axes length), alterations in developm ent and in abiotic stress (salt treatm ent, lowtem perature and osm otic stress) responses. Taken together, our results indicate that m itochondrial A/ N-Inv isoform s play distinct roles and differentiallycontribute to plant growth and developm ent, and to tolerate environmental adverse conditions. We hypothesize that sucrose, or its hydrolysis productsmight be involved in signaling transduction pathway(s) that regulate those functions.
