Potential protective effects of the bisphosphonate alendronate on vascular system

Bisphosphonates are commonly drugs used for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis. Since the risk of cardiovascular disease is increased in postmenopausal women, we study the extraosseous actions of the bisphosphonate alendronate (ALN). To that end, cellular and molecular events involved in vascular remodeling and survival were studied, such as cell proliferation and migration, nitric oxide (NO) production, and angiogenesis.
