Resumen:
Text-analysis tools focused on limnologyresearch allowed us to find three approaches inthe analysis of ecosystems services (ES) provided bybacteria, archaea and viruses: (i) a prevalence of taxonomicanalyses focused on the relevance of microbialbiodiversity in sustaining ES, (ii) studies focused ondiversity and functional aspects of bacteria, archaeaand viruses and their ES provided and (iii) researchfocused on disservices. Supporting, regulating andprovisioning services were the most discussed. Significantgaps include knowledge about the ecologicaltraits of prokaryotic taxa and viral particles, quantitativeinformation on microbial community-level functionsintegrated through different ecosystems, and adeeper integration of positive and negative microbialcommunity functional attributes and their feedbacksto ecosystem services provision. Future researchshould include: (i) development of new bioinformatictools coupled to theoretical and methodologicalframeworks leading to a more powerful analysisof metagenomic data, (ii) inclusion of earth observationdata for comprehensive modeling of large-scaleassessment of ES and its valuation, (iii) advanceinvestigation on the ecological processes that virusessupport in the environment and its significance for theecological performance of microbial communities’services provision.
