Resumen:
The aim of this chapter is to reflect the practical elegance in the design of synthetic systems involving biocatalysis powered by light or photocatalysis using enzymes. For the Practitioner, it is well known that catalysis plays a key role in organic synthesis, whereby highly valuable target compounds are produced in a more economical, energy-saving fashion with the obvious advantage to be more respectful to the environment. In this sense, the development of methodologies which take advantage of features that are specific of each sort of catalysis, ends up being a challenging and fascinating way of thinking in chemistry. Whereas the photobiocatalysis field is still starting to blossom, the examples chosen here show that the successful combination of light and enzymatic catalyst is taking very appealing shapes. Moving from sequential processes to enzyme promiscuity, a broad spectrum of systems that are useful in synthetic organic chemistry are presented in detail, glimpsing some novel concepts that may still be fruitfully explored.
