Resumen:
Chronic wounds are those in which the progress through the normal stages of healing are interrupted in a state of pathologic inflammation. As a result, the healing process is delayed, incomplete, and uncoordinated. Chronic wounds represent a significant cause of morbidity and mortality for a large portion of the population and result in enormous health care expenditures with annual costs estimated in billion dollars. Most ulcers are caused by ischemia, secondary to diabetes mellitus, venous stasis, and pressure. We suggest that the introduction of non-pathogenic bacteria or their by-products in chronic wounds may disassemble the balance established by pathogenic bacteria. This would allow antibiotics, antiseptics and defense mechanisms to be effective in removing pathogens and allow the normal wound healing process. On these basis, we performed an exploratory study to establish the comparative effectiveness of bacteriotherapy with topical application of L. plantarum cultured in de Man, Rogosa and Sharpe medium (MRS) to provide an alternative method for burn treatment using SD-Ag a useful antibacterial agent for burn wound treatment as a reference.
